Spain's Christmas Lottery prizes pay their own tax, the special tax on lottery prizes. The first 40.000 € of each décimo is tax-free; anything above that is taxed at 20%, withheld by the bank when it pays you. Here's what you keep from each big prize:
Prizes per €20 décimo
| Prize | Gross | Tax | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| El Gordo (first prize) | 400.000 € | 72.000 € | 328.000 € |
| Second prize | 125.000 € | 17.000 € | 108.000 € |
| Third prize | 50.000 € | 2.000 € | 48.000 € |
| Fourth prize | 20.000 € | 0 € | 20.000 € |
| Fifth prize | 6.000 € | 0 € | 6.000 € |
If you share the décimo
With a shared ticket, the exemption is split too. With €5 of El Gordo you get 100.000 €: 10.000 € tax-free and 20% on the rest. You keep 82.000 €.
